1. Mont Royal University Professors Frances Widdowson (left) and Albert Howard, Marxist both, offer this justification for the residential school system in their book Disrobing the Aboriginal Industry, 2008:

    "Leaving aside the tragedy of incidental sexual abuse, what would have been the result if aboriginal people were not taught to read and write, to adopt a wider human consciousness, or to develop some degree of contemporary human knowledge and disciplines? Hunting and gathering economies are unviable in an era of industrialization, and so were it not for the educational and socialization efforts provided by the residential schools, aboriginal peoples would be even more marginalized and dysfunctional than they are today.”

  2. Anglican Church Reverend John Both Good, founder of the residential school at Lytton, B.C. (pictured above), as described in Geoffrey York’s The Dispossessed (1989, page 31):

    "He told the Lytton Indians that they must end ‘all their manifold hypocrisy, uncleanliness, and idleness, and many other sins and evil practices’. Reverend Good decided that his new school for boys would instill ‘habits of instant obedience.’ He built the school a few miles from Lytton, in order to escape the ‘evil influences’ of the Indian community"

    "The federal Department of Health delivers health-care services only to aboriginals. All the provinces have the responsibility for delivering health-care services to real people in real towns, hospitals, doctors, nurses”

    He had previously served as the Province’s Attorney General with responsibility for Native Affairs.

  5. On the 14th of December 2012, Braydon Mazurkiewich, then a Tory youth leader, posted a comment on his Facebook page where he expressed his feeling about a planned urban reserve in Winnipeg on a former defense base.

    “If they build a reserve inside this city I think that will be the last straw and I will finally leave what is becoming the laughing stock. […] That was built for hardworking men and women of the military, not freeloading Indians”.

    Mazurkiewich later apologized but maintained his opposition to the reserve in suburban Winnipeg:

    You know, you hear on reserves all the time, people are burning down their own homes. There are shootings and stabbings, and we don’t need to bring more of that to Winnipeg.”

  9. British Columbia Chief Justice Allan McEachern, in the Delgamuukw case in the BC Supreme Court, 1991, offering his view of pre-contact west coast Indigenous society:

    "it would not be accurate to assume that even pre-contact existence in the territory was in the least bit idyllic. The plaintiffs’ ancestors had no written language, no horses or wheeled vehicles, slavery and starvation was not uncommon, wars with neighbouring peoples were common, and there is no doubt, to quote Hobbs [sic], that aboriginal life in the territory was, at best, “nasty, brutish and short”
